What is an OLED TV?
By tyrrell123
OLED is an abbreviation that stands for Organic Light Emitting Diode which is a new technology that has been developed for television screens. All electronic shows this year featured this new trend and the popularity of OLED TV screens has simply taken the market by storm. This includes one of biggest shows in the world that was held in Las Vegas known as the Consumer Electronics Show where Sony was the first brand to come up with this fantastic OLED TV screen in their collection. This was one of the biggest product introductions of the year and the TV seemed very promising.
The new OLED display screen comes in a new eleven inches television set by Sony brand called the XEL-1. This TV is known for its light weight design and sleek and slim measurements. This HDTV by the brand is so thin it is only about one tenth of an inch in thickness! And it did not just make waves in Vegas either. Another OLED television screen made a memorable appearance at the FPD International Show held in the month of November in the Asian region as well. The brand who showed off the product was Samsung who came up with a thirty one inch OLED high definition television. This television has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and the resolution format is 1080P.
Other companies are also geared towards releasing their own models soon and have invested a lot of money in the projects including Matsushita (Panasonic), LG and Toshiba. Toshiba has already come up with their thirty inch OLED TV while Samsung says they will begin to sell their products by the year 2010. Many patents in the OLED TV technology have been owned by the Eastman-Kodak brand and they will receive the royalties as licensing fees from every item that is sold. Moreover, the company brought forward the compelling OLED material titled EK-GD403 which is known to run on green dopant technology which means that the OLED technology is just beginning to thrive.
According to the year’s market research, around twenty eight billion dollars worth of LCD TVs were sold off to consumers and for the plasma television the estimated amount was eight billion. Even with the expensive technologies used in these television sets, the demand is not diminishing at all. But there is a reason why the OLED TV is set to make even more waves in the near future – it is a cost competitive technology. By the year 2015 the estimated selling of the OLED display would reach more than seventeen billion dollars according to research conducted by DisplaySearch.
The current market which stands at about half a billion dollars makes OLED TV a sound investment and Samsung has about seventy percent of the market share already. Although these screens cannot be used in larger television screens like HDTVs or even in computer monitors, these displays are still gaining popularity. Another major reason why OLED screens will be more popular to consumers is their ease in wall mounting. While all brands have brought about televisions and plasma screens that can be mounted on the wall, even though most people would like to, they do not wall mount them because of the associated problems.
While other TV sets have this difficulty, OLED TV screens are incredibly light and can be mounted easily without any problems! For some time digital cameras have been using this technology and so have cell phones. The energy efficiency of this technology opens up the possible uses for it in consumers lives especially in portable devices it makes things easier. While LCDs require a back light to function properly, OLEDs need no such backlighting and so use very much less power.
